MySpace removed profiles of 90,000 registered sex offenders over a two year period

The online networking site MySpace has identified and barred some 90,000 registered sex offenders from using the site over the last two years, MySpace revealed to an investigative task force on Tuesday.

The “shocking” number was 40,000 more than MySpace had previously acknowledged, according to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a co-chairman of the task force of state attorneys general looking into sex offenders’ use of social networking.

MySpace, owned by News Corp.’s Fox Interactive Media digital division, disclosed the figures to the task force in response to a subpoena.

“This shocking revelation, resulting from our subpoena, provides compelling proof that social networking sites remain rife with sexual predators,” Blumenthal said in a statement.

Lobbies to Protect Speculative Oil Trades
(E)xecutives from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, two of Wall Street’s largest investment banks, made the case that their multibillion-dollar investments in energy contracts have not led to higher oil prices.

I made up a little NNDB map of some of the top oil, securities and banking board interlocks. It’s nowhere near as big as some of the other board interlock maps I’ve worked on in the past since it is focused on a few narrow segments rather than the bigger picture.

Separately, lobbyists for the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) and other financial entities such as hedge funds roamed through congressional office buildings this month and, in the Senate, left behind short policy statements that defended the current state of regulation. “Blaming speculation for the increase in energy prices is to confuse causation and correlation,” one of the documents said.

A second document, or “talker,” asserted: “Congress and regulators have acted to strengthen oversight of the energy markets. Give the new authorities time to work.”

But time is running short. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal agency that regulates oil trading, has drawn the increasing ire of lawmakers for exempting financial firms from rules that limit speculative buying, a prerogative usually reserved for airlines and trucking companies that need to lock in future fuel costs. The CFTC has also waived regulations on U.S. investors who trade commodities on some overseas markets, allowing them to accumulate large quantities of the future oil supply by making purchases on lightly regulated foreign exchanges.

more on the fortune 1000 companies board overlaps

I have been working (off and on) for awhile to try to get all my names and companies listed here more or less arranged alphabetically and onto a single NNDB map. Unfortunately, it seems to be too much data for one map to handle effectively- or at least the map seems to be permanently bogged down when I try to add more names, so I’ll just have to give you what I’ve got and leave it at that, I think. Actually, I’ve got two different projects here, which I’ll combine in this single post. One is the uncompleted single map, the second one took people’s names who didn’t make it into the original project due to too many of their companies having already made it onto the list and made up a new alternate map for them. So far, I haven’t tried to combine the two lists of names and companies, but I think a rough ballpark figure is that 200 (and change) people’s names would cover ~650 different companies total. I’ll include below links for individual maps for those names and a list of their companies. Larger views of the two maps can be seen by clicking on the screenshots below. And yes, there are still worthy names (using 3M execs as examples- George W. Buckley, Peter G. Peterson and Vance D. Coffman) which didn’t make it onto either map due to company overlaps having pretty well already covered what they would have added at that point.

I just started a stone soup group

Today, I started a new project. I gathered together a handful of nice looking polished stones and went and visited a few friends and neighbors to tell them about my new group which I was contemplating- a stone soup group. If you aren’t familiar with the Grimm’s fairy tale about Stone Soup, wikipedia has an entry about it which will give you a sense of it. My idea- still in its formative stages- is to build community networks using the idea of stone soup as an icebreaker to get people talking about cooperation, sharing and tips to help out in times when resources seem more scarce. I shared a few stories of things which I knew about some of my ancestors doing, talked about a neighborhood bulletin board for trading skills, goods or posting needs and offerings. Craigslist also came up during conversation, since they have both barter and free sections. So far, we don’t have any concrete plans for a potluck or gathering here yet, but simply by beginning the discussion I now have 5 new donated stones to add to the pot, several stories given and recieved an more of a sense of connection with some neighbors. Also, some ideas for possible future ways to expand on the concept, such as a wikipedia type project for such tips and stories. Everyone I’ve talked to about it so far thought it was a good idea, too. How about you?

Making progress mapping the Fortune 1000 companies through the people who connect them

ETA- I’ve substituted Dale R. Laurance in the second map in place of Gerhard Schulmeyer, so the list below will be slightly different from the map. Also adding in a third map (and eventually probably a fourth) to the two originals.

I’ve been working some more on the NNDB mapping; the first one was getting unwieldy in terms of loading things, so I started a second one and a third one. Below are pretty much the names of the companies which I intended to have on the map (a few extras snuck into the map, but I took them off this list). I did take the liberty of not sticking strictly to the Fortune 1000 list, deciding to add in a few Global 500 companies as well; not focusing on them, but adding them as I run across them while researching the Fortune 1000 companies and the associated names. I’ve provided links for the people and company NNDB maps below for those who wish to explore them using that method, but if you’d prefer to see their bio pages instead of the maps for them, the links for those can be found on the map pages (map one, map two map three map four). Not a completed project yet, but it’s shaping up… oh, there are currently 4 (by my count, let me know if I’ve missed one or two) same last name pairs on the list so far, but only one pair is clearly linked- Vernon Jordan and Ann Dibble Jordan. Technically, Ann Dibble Jordan might not be quite strong enough to make the list by herself, but taken as a couple they are indeed a power couple. One other note- there are quite a few people who are linked to a lot of these companies who I’ve decided not to map simply because I’m attempting to minimize the number of people on the map and they duplicate or nearly duplicate what is already covered ground. A few examples would be Michael A. Miles, Bobby Ray Inman, James Farrell, George Mitchell, Alan G. Lafley, and Rozanne L. Ridgway. Conversely, some people who made the list don’t actually link to that many companies, they just link to ones which aren’t easily mapped otherwise. No guarantee that this method will be optimal, but my intent isn’t an optimal mapping, but rather to give an overall sense of the coverage which 150 or so names (about 165 names currently) can provide for the top companies in the US (about 575 now, including a few global corporations in the mix).
