Making progress on the Fortune 1000 mapping project

May 16, 2008

I’m pleased with the NNDB mapping and how well it seems to work. Here’s a little taste of what I’ve done so far… click on the small version to see it as full size, or you can explore the map directly through this link. My rough count is around 250 companies and about 65 names.

The Independent UK- Facebook can ruin your life. And so can MySpace, Bebo…

February 25, 2008

Here’s an exerpt from a pretty good article dissussing some of the privacy issues and pitfalls associated with social networking sites:

Police, colleges and schools are monitoring MySpace and Facebook pages for what they deem to be “inappropriate” content. Online security holes and users’ naivety are combining to cause privacy breaches and identity thefts. And what all this, and more, adds up to is this: online social networking can seriously damage your life.

Just ask the 27 workers at the Automobile Club of Southern California fired for messages about colleagues on their MySpace sites; the Florida sheriff’s deputy whose MySpace page revealed his heavy drinking and fascination with female breasts – and swiftly found himself handing in his badge; the Argos worker in Wokingham fired for saying on Facebook that working at the firm was “shit”; the Las Vegas teacher at a Catholic school fired after he declared himself gay on his MySpace page; the staff of an Ottawa grocery chain fired for their “negative comments” on Facebook; the 19 Northampton police officers investigated for Facebook comments; and Kevin Colvin, an intern at Anglo Irish Bank, who told his employers he had a family emergency, but whose Facebook page revealed he had, in reality, been cavorting in drag at a Hallowe’en party.

What these and other cases show is that employers and authorities are now monitoring what people imagined were private websites – and using the contents against them.

Coke or Pepsi?

February 24, 2008

Here’s a whimsical little map I’ve made up for you…

I call it Coke or Pepsi?, though that’s not particularly what it’s about. The interesting thing to me is that the Chairman of the 9/11 Commission- Thomas H. Kean- sits on the BOD of a Fortune 500 company (Franklin Resources) which owns the company (Fiduciary Trust) which had offices where Flight 175 hit the South tower of the WTC. In 2002, USA Today reported that

Kean has long served as director of Fiduciary Trust Co.

source. As the article also mentions, he is/was also a director of Aramark, which

ran the food court on top of 2 World Trade Center as well as concessions and tours of the observation deck

So… Kean is/was on the BOD of, by my count, 6 Fortune 500 companies, at least two of which lost quite a number of emloyees on 9/11. Another one is an oil company. Also, he was on the BOD of the subsidiary company WHERE the second plane impacted. He was additionally on the BOD of Bell Atlantic, which merged with GTE in 2000 to form another Fortune 500 company- Verizon. I guess you could say he might have had a small financial interest in the events of 9/11, what with one thing and another…

Also on the BOD of Franklin was the CEO of Fiduciary, Anne Tatlock, who had a famous near miss- being out of the office that day in order to attend Warren Buffett’s celebrity charity event, arriving at Offutt AFB just in time to witness the second plane hit the South tower. Of course, Offutt is where Dubya would land later in the day; the same location where Brent Scowcroft was en route to observe the nuclear wargame Global Guardian… as the Pentagon was being hit, etc. But you knew all that, right?

Fortune 500 BOD overlap project- letter A additions

February 23, 2008

I did promise to post a portion of phase two of my Fortune 500 BOD overlap project today, so here’s what I’ve got for the A letter companies which aren’t already on at least one of the group maps. I’m not totally sure how this portion of the project will work out most effectively, but here is what I’ve done so far with the mapping and the notes on the companies and people associated with them… in some cases I’ve linked directly to the expanded muckety page for the company, in others I’ve saved an expanded map with extraneous information removed. It may seem like a random process, but I probably had a reason for the decision at the time when I made it.
